When the Barnett’s moved to Towersey in 1973 they took on a large open garden with no structure or shade. A trip to the horticultural ‘Mecca’ at Sissinghurst fired up their interest and enthusiasm and they started to plan a radical transformation of their ‘airfield’. Formal hornbeam hedges planted in 1975 now separate smaller informal areas that include a nuttery, yew hedges, many trees, shrubs and plants.
The garden has become a cool, leafy and peaceful place and the Barnett’s feel they have achieved something worthwhile. A new project completed in 2000 now invites visitors to the “Mound Meander” – stroll along mown paths or climb up for a fine view of the Chilterns. Aerial photographs make a very interesting record of how everything has developed since the garden was started.
